Annie Whiles

My work is based in Contemporary Art Practice. My studio practice evolves around the translation of figurative and representational line drawing, into image and object.
Recent work has held an enquiry into emblematic and heraldic language, from embroidered badges to Union Banners. I am interested in the absurdity and juxtaposition of these pictorial motifs that through symmetry purport to be informative. I have produced a series of hand and machine sewn pieces that perpetuate this language, exploring my own sense of motif that create the possibility for an –˜extraordinary' narrative, that might suggest the advent of a miraculous event. I use my immediate surroundings and experience, chair, dog, street and neighbour.
Artefact seems to lend itself to the value of this. These oversized badges and motifs are hand embroidered and constructed from layers of canvas, felt, satin and silks.
